Steve has a Bachelor’s degree and a Master’s degree in Music Education from Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville. While attending SIU-E, he studied violin with Kent Perry and chamber music under John Kendall. He also received a String Award from the university in 1979. Steve has been playing for 47 years. He has played for the St. Louis Philharmonic Orchestra and several chamber orchestras and quartets. He has taught in the public schools for 32 years, and taught private lessons throughout that period of time. He has taught in the Parkway School District, Ferguson-Florissant School District, and the Fulton County Schools in Atlanta Georgia. He has taught in the Rockwood School District for the last 27 years until he retired from the public school systems in 2014, having 400+ students per year. He has taught at the elementary, middle school, and high school levels.
Steve has a very good rapport with his students and believes in much positive encouragement and praise to motivate his students in his lessons. He teaches from the Suzuki Violin and Viola Book series, but he also teaches fiddle music and gospel music. His hobbies include singing and playing gospel hymns by ear on the piano.
