Steve Johnson has been playing guitar since age 12. He attended the University of Iowa where he studied music, music theory, jazz improvisation, jazz combo performance, and classical theory and composition. Steve has been teaching for over 30 years and has been teaching at Mozingo Music since 1987. Many of his former students have gone on to become prominent players in the St Louis music scene as well as nationally, including members of local acts El Monstero, Plastic, and many others.
He’s also traveled throughout the U.S. and Canada performing in various touring bands and has played over 7,000 live performances in his career including Busch Stadium twice for the Global Day of Prayer Concert, Scottrade Center, The Pageant, Harrah’s and Ameristar Casinos, Windsor Crossing Church, and Joyce Meyer Ministries as well as virtually every live venue in St Louis and the surrounding area. Touring bands include “Voyager”, “Midnite Special” band, “Abraham Rush”, “Media”, and “Elevation: A Tribute to U2″. Local bands include “Cagney”, “Adam’s Edge” house band at the Adam’s Mark Hotel in St Louis, “Wax”, Kelly Wild, and “Boom”. Steve has appeared on albums by “Midnite Special”, “First Flight”, “Marvin F. Cockrell and Focus”(2), “Media”, “James A Jackson Jr.”, “J.T.” and “Todd Helton”, as well as countless other recording sessions and demos. He is currently the guitarist for Grace Church St. Louis as well as St. Louis band “Paint The Earth” and continues to do recording sessions and write/record music of his own. Steve has experience performing and teaching rock, jazz, blues, metal, country, acoustic fingerstyle, bluegrass, funk, fusion, and classical music, as well as theory, sight reading, and improvisation in all styles.
